The polls that have been published so far are trying to make judgements based on people’s opinions almost a year ahead of the general election.
Polling in India is a hard business for several reasons. First, the country is politically fragmented. We have a large number of regional parties, whose influence is restricted to certain states or even parts of states. Then, even if two regions see battles between the same parties, elections there are more often than not likely to be fought on different issues. Finally, and most importantly, we have a first-past-the-post system combined with multi-cornered contests, which makes predictions difficult.

congress-ahead-of-jds-in-karnataka-ls-bypolls 240813103631Bangalore: The ruling Congress party candidates were racing ahead of their rival JDS in Mandya and Bangalore rural Lok Sabha constituencies in the August 21 bypolls as counting of votes was taken up on Saturday.
Congress' candidate actress Ramya was ahead of her opponent CS Puttaraju by over 12,000 votes while her party colleague DK Suresh had established a lead of over 18,000 votes against JDS' Anita Kumaraswamy, wife of former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy, in the third round, officials said.

arvind-9090New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal on Friday promised to enact a law that would let people frame their laws in Delhi if his party won the coming election.
Kejriwal was addressing students at St Stephens College in Delhi University. He urged them to oust the "corrupt" Congress government in the city in assembly election expected in November.

UPpolice542Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government has issued arrest warrants against 70 top Vishwa Hindu Parishad leaders including Ashok Singhal, Pravin Togadia and Ram Vilas Vedanti after the party said it will go ahead with its proposed Ayodhya yatra from August 25 (Sunday).
The local administration is expecting around 50,000 VHP activists to take part int he yatra. Meanwhile, 20 other VHP activists have also been detained while some senior leaders including Vedanti have gone underground.

M Id 412987 ManmohanPrime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi jointly inaugurated the information and broadcasting ministry's new Rs. 60 crore National Media Centre on Raisina Road in New Delhi on Saturday.
The National Media Centre in central Delhi has modern infrastructure and will serve as the communication hub of the government. It is likely to house the Press Information Bureau (PIB) as well. The swanky new media centre is equipped with state-of-the-art technology to facilitate enhanced media access to the government.

12 Lok Sabha MPs from Andhra suspended for disrupting House proceedings

LOK-SABHA-MPs-suspended 23 New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar on Friday suspended 12 members from Andhra Pradesh from the House for five days for creating unending disruption. The Speaker named the 12, four from Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and eight from Congress, under rule 374 (A) of parliamentary proceedings, which automatically suspends them for the next five sittings.Under the rule, any member named by the speaker shall ‘stand automatically suspended from the service of the House for five consecutive sittings or the remainder of the session whichever is less.’

Artistes and activists launch website to 'expose' Narendra Modi

The new attack on the BJP leader comes via a website dedicated to "expose the daily scented droppings of a PR machine" apparently working for Modi.
Named Pheku, a popular Twitter hashtag used to describe Modi, the site went live on Friday.
