Govt hopes to pass food bill in Lok Sabha today

Keen to pass Congress chief Sonia Gandhi's pet welfare legislation, the Food Security Bill, but concerned over the large number of amendments (over 260) moved by the opposition parties, the government has indicated it would accommodate some of them.The government wants to pass the bill in the Lok Sabha on August 20, the 69th birth anniversary of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.

To mark the occasion, Sonia Gandhi will launch the scheme in Delhi while Congress-ruled Haryana and Assam are also expected to start the right to food plan Tuesday.

Coal Scam:Parliament adjouned till Thursday 

Both houses of parliament were adjourned till Thursday after being repeatedly disrupted over the BJP's demand for a statement by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the missing files related to the allocation of coal blocks.

As soon as the Lok Sabha assembled at 11 a.m. Tuesday, the price rise issue was raised by the Left parties and the Janata Dal-United (JD-U) forcing Speaker Meira Kumar to adjourn the house for half-an-hour.

India's two main parties - the governing Congress and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) - are losing ground among voters, an opinion poll showed, with regional groups set to take nearly half of parliament seats in next year's election.

A national government largely made up of regional parties, with their own diverse agendas, is likely to be fragile and unwieldy, putting at risk Asia's third-largest economy, whose growth rate has already tumbled to a decade low after a period of policy paralysis.

The Congress, which is battling allegations of corruption, would drop to 121 seats from the 206 it now holds in the 545-member Lok Sabha, if voting in the election were to reflect the poll, conducted by Team Cvoter, a public opinion research company, for India Today.

In a tit-for-tat move, the Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed a resolution condemning attacks on India by Pakistan.

Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar said, "Pakistan must not take India's patience for granted… J&K (Jammu & Kashmir), including parts forcibly and illegally occupied by Pakistan, is part of India."

Government to table Land Acquisition Bill.

The government is expected to table the Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill, 2011 and National Food Security Bill in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. But even even before the two landmark bills are tabled in Parliament, there has been some controversy too.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh opposing the Food Security Bill. Modi has claimed that state governments are not being given a say in determining 'the eligibility criteria' and has asked him to call a meeting of chief ministers on the bill.

However, Congress General Secretary Digvijaya Singh has taken a dig at Modi for overstepping Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj.

Ajsu party to contest LS polls in four states

The Ajsu party on Thursday decided to make a limited foray in national politics and would contest the next Lok Sabha elections in three states, besides Jharkhand.

"The party has decided to plunge into national politics. To start with it will contest four seats each in West Bengal and Odisha and two in Chhatisgarh," Ajsu vice-president Praveen Prabhakar told reporters here.
