Rupee's free fall: How it will impact you

rupeeGovernment has taken a number of steps to stem the depreciation of Indian rupee including moderation in demand of non-essential imports and enhancing supply of capital flows, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said.

"A number of steps have been taken to moderate demand of non-essential imports on April 12, 2013, enhance capital flows to augment supply of foreign exchange and curb speculation in the foreign exchange market to stem the rupee depreciation," Chidambaram said in a written reply to Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
He said fall in value of rupee in the recent period is due to supply-demand imbalance in domestic foreign exchange market on account of elevated levels of current account deficit (CAD) and volatility in capital flows, particularly FII inflows.

Karnataka bypoll: Voting for Mandya and Bangalore Rural Lok Sabha seats underway

deve-gowdaBy-polls to Mandya and Bangalore Rural Lok Sabha seats will be held today with 36.37 lakh voters expected to exercise their franchise at the end of a bitterly fought battle between the ruling Congress and JD(S).

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has played for high stakes in the polls that was marked by a no-holds barred attack by leaders of Congress and JD(S), which has the backing of BJP for both the seats.

The bypoll was necessitated by the resignation of N Cheluvarayaswamy (Mandya) and former Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy (Bangalore Rural) who quit after being elected to the Assembly in May.

Forget 2014, the Congress and BJP need to sit together today
Congress-and-BJPAll the indications are that the next Lok Sabha elections will see the national parties, the Congress and the BJP, being the two leading winners – but completely dependent on alliance (and other) partners to form a government.

“CNN-IBN-The Hindu Election Tracker poll conducted by the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), that paints this unsettling picture, says that though both the major electoral formations will get 29 per cent of the vote share each, the NDA will be ahead with anything between 172 and 180 seats and the UPA behind with 149 to 153 — in short, a gap of 22. The BJP’s score, up from 2009, would be in the range 156 to 164; the Congress’s tally, 131 to 139, down from the last general elections.”

BJP not seen gaining from Cong loss; regional parties will rule the roost.
BJP-CongressIf elections to the Lok Sabha were to be held this month, the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance is likely to lose 122 seats. This is reflected in the India Today-CVoter Mood of the Nation opinion poll.
But, no way does the national dialogue ends there. There are reactions already flowing in from our digital audience. And in this space, the verdict is loud and clear: BJP is not seen gaining from Congress Party's perceived loss as both have disappointed the voter, according to our digital followers.

Election could put regional parties in driving seat - poll.
9320566-illustration-of-the-india-flag-on-map-of-country-isolated-on-white-backgroundIndia's two main parties - the governing Congress and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) - are losing ground among voters, an opinion poll showed, with regional groups set to take nearly half of parliament seats in next year's election.
A national government largely made up of regional parties, with their own diverse agendas, is likely to be fragile and unwieldy, putting at risk Asia's third-largest economy, whose growth rate has already tumbled to a decade low after a period of policy paralysis.
The Congress, which is battling allegations of corruption, would drop to 121 seats from the 206 it now holds in the 545-member Lok Sabha, if voting in the election were to reflect the poll, conducted by Team Cvoter, a public opinion research company, for India Today.

The UPA government, adrift at the centre, would like to advance the 2014 Lok Sabha election to October-November 2013.
That would serve three purposes.
One, avoid the electoral blowback of four likely successive state assembly defeats in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Delhi. Two, give the BJP less time to sort out its Narendra Modi-as-PM-candidate dilemma. And three, nip Mulayam Singh Yadav's Third Front idea in the bud.
Time, however, is not on the UPA’s side. While the SP and BSP, enmeshed in corruption, communalism and casteism, can be counted on for rancid, day-to-day support, the Congress too needs time to gain full electoral benefit from its cash transfer scheme and food security bill.

The resolution comes a day after Pakistan's National Assembly passed a resolution accusing Indian troops of "unprovoked aggression" on the LoC and extending support to the "struggle" of the Kashmiri people on Tuesday.

Why Pak celebrates its I-Day on Aug 14

Why Pakistan celebrates its I-Day on Aug 14, Pakistan.

Bangalore, Aug 14:
The separate states of India and Pakistan were created at midnight on August 15, 1947. Yet while India celebrates that day as its independence day, Pakistan celebrates its independence day a day before. Why it is so? Reason 1: Pakistan's first independence day was also celebrated on August 15 but later on it was advanced to August 14.

One of the reasons is that British Viceroy Lord Mountbatten, who had chosen August 15 to commemorate the surrender of Japan to the Allies Power marking the end of World War II in 1945, sought to transfer power to Pakistan on August 14 so that he could be present in New Delhi to observe India's maiden independence day celebrations. Reason 2: Also in 1948, Pakistan decided to celebrate its Independence Day on August 14 because 27 Ramadan, an auspicious date of the Islamic lunar calendar, coincided with it. Hence the Pakistanis decided to celebrate their Independence Day a day before the actual date.

The party's campaign strategy and ticket distribution were yet to be finalised as leaders were awaiting a decision on who was going to lead the campaign.
Delhi BJP chief Vijay Goel had earlier said he had spoken to party president Rajnath Singh about appointing Gadkari as the poll in-charge. "I have met Rajnathji and asked to appoint Gadkariji. I have worked with him in the past and would like to work with him again," he had said.

If elections to the Lok Sabha were to be held this month, the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance is likely to lose 122 seats, says the India Today-CVoter Mood of the Nation opinion poll which is being featured in the magazine's next issue which will hit the stands on August 16.
Though the UPA's numbers will come down to 137 from the 259 it now has, it does not mean the NDA gains these seats. The BJP-led alliance may also lose four seats, and end up with a smaller tally of 155.
The seats the UPA now holds will, in fact, go to other parties, most of them regional. The other parties may gain 126 seats and with 251 seats can claim stake to form the government as a Third Front.
The poll said the UPA has been consistently losing support of voters since 2010.

However, there will be a major flip in the vote share of the UPA and the NDA.

The ruling alliance's share will be down to 28 per cent-a fall of 8 per cent, while the opposition alliance's vote share will jump by six per cent to reach 32 per cent.

If the seat shares are broken down for each state, the Congress will lose 26 of the 33 seats in Andhra Pradesh despite its decision to carve out Telangana with big gains for the TRS.

In Bihar, the JD-U, which just snapped its ties with the BJP, will lose 10 seats. The BJP will however not gain much. The winner will be the RJD, with a jump from 4 to 14 seats.

In Gujarat, the BJP will win 25 seats and the Congress a mere 5. But the BJP will lose 12 seats in Karnataka and gain will be for the Congress.

Maharashtra will see a rise of the Shiv Sena and decline of the Congress.

And in Uttar Pradesh, the state that can swing the general elections, the Congress will lose 16 seats while the SP will win 34 and the BSP 27 of the 80 seats. The BJP will be left with only two more seats from its 2009 tally of 10, says the opinion poll.

The Trinamool Congress will be strengthened with the party winning more than half of the 42 Lok Sabha seats from West Bengal. The Left Front will also gain two seats.

The study is based on a national representative sample of 15,815 randomly selected respondents across all 28 states between August 2 and 10, with interviews conducted face-to-face. Margin of error is +\-3 per cent.

Government to table Land Acquisition Bill.
food security billThe government is expected to table the Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill, 2011 and National Food Security Bill in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. But even even before the two landmark bills are tabled in Parliament, there has been some controversy too.
Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh opposing the Food Security Bill. Modi has claimed that state governments are not being given a say in determining 'the eligibility criteria' and has asked him to call a meeting of chief ministers on the bill.
However, Congress General Secretary Digvijaya Singh has taken a dig at Modi for overstepping Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj.
